Are you an optometrist? Or a frequent visitor to the optical salons where you get your glasses fitted? Find out how the latest trends in technology support vision care!
World Optometry Day
World Optometry Day was initiated in 1986 by Dr. G. Burt Holmes, former president of the American Optometric Association. He sponsored creating a special day to expand awareness of this field of science. Since then, the World Council of Optometry has celebrated World Optometry Day every year on March 23rd. The growing understanding of how to care for our eyes is thanks to specialists in this field. Science has grown tremendously since 1986, supported by technologies that allow for a better and more efficient selection of vision correction materials. One of the latest is augmented reality, which will also help your eyesight.
What’s the difference between optometry and ophthalmology?
The distinction between ophthalmology and optometry might be confusing. The main difference is that an ophthalmologist diagnoses and treats eye diseases such as glaucoma, conjunctivitis, chalazion, or cataracts. On the other hand, an optometrist recognizes and corrects eye defects and provides advice on eye care, prescribing, fitting and supplying glasses or contact lenses. Optometrists are able to detect and diagnose eye disorders but tend to refer patients to doctors for treatment.
Virtual try-on solutions as support for optometry
Among the eye exams typical of optometry are automatic/computerized measurements of visual defects, corneal curvature, corneal thickness, intraocular pressure, binocular vision, and accommodations using a phoropter, which allow the selection of the appropriate correction. Where does augmented reality come in to play? First of all, by removing the stigma and creating awareness that we look good in glasses. The range of frames available on the market is so broad that each of us will find something unique for ourselves. Virtual try-on solutions allow you to try on glasses at home, on your couch, at work, while traveling, etc. Within-app PD measurements and 1:1 virtual eyeglass proportions, you can choose frames that meet your criteria and needs. And then match them with lenses with the proper correction and solutions to suit their purpose.
